Open Standards and Open Source BoF
Wednesday, 7:00pm-8:00pm
Location:
Oregon Convention Center
777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd
Portland, Oregon 97232
Room: E146
Description:
Mark Carlson, Toshiba
This BoF discusses how industry standards can become more relevant in the world of Open Source implementations. The attendees of the Alliance Partners Technical Symposium (APTS) are extremely interested in a candid discussion with the open source community on any assessment of progress and recommendations on the path forward. APTS is held the same week as OSCON and is a meeting of industry standard bodies. Below are some accomplishments since last year’s BoF.
Implementation of the Cloud Auditing Data Federation (CADF) in the Celiometer portion of Open Stack. Implementation of addition CADF standards are planned.
Worked with OpenStack Python code to enable the Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface standard (CIMI) alongside that of Nova and the EC2 API effort. Similarly, the SNIA has equivalent Python code to enable their Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI) alongside that of OpenStack Swift storage.
Development of a RESTful interface (Redfish) to meet the expectations of end users for simple and interoperable management of modern scalable platform hardware. Redfish integrates easily with commonly-used tools by specifying a RESTful interface and utilizing JSON and OData. The interface group has released four work-in-progress specifications in the last five months for industry feedback.
Are these the right ways forward? Are there other paths that may be better? Does implementing an existing standard represent a viable path? Can simultaneous development really work? Would open source libraries above the standard be useful? Does the standards process need to change more?
Please join us to discuss these issues.
If you would like to join the discussion in one of the OSCON BoFs, there is no need to formally sign up. You can check the list of prescheduled BoFs online (when the event gets closer), or check the BoF schedule board onsite at the Oregon Convention Center (near registration) for topics and locations.
